Running a business is hard no matter what line of work you’re in. But what happens when the bulk of your business comes in over the course of six months instead of a full year? That’s the reality for a pool service company in New England, and it’s not always easy.
Episode #2 of the Create Smarter podcast is an interview with Matt Khouri, Founder & CEO of Pool Pals, Inc. Matt founded the company back in 2003 when he was just 20 years old, and grew it the old-fashioned way – handing out flyers and knocking on doors. Today, Pool Pals works with more than 700 clients in New England, and are working on rolling out a franchise model. It’s safe to say things have grown a bit since Matt launched the business as a side hustle back in college.
In the interview, Matt dives deep into the business. From catching the entrepreneurship bug back when he was a kid, to realizing that he wanted to run his own business, to taking the leap to full-time, Matt walks us through the process. Matt shares his advice for people just starting out, and gives some perspective on his experience of delegating some of the day-to-day work to allow him to focus bigger picture. We also cover the changing landscape of the service industry, and how companies and owners have been forced to evolve to keep up.
It’s an inspiring conversation for anyone looking to start a business, and it’s eye-opening to hear about the work that goes into it.
