As part of a larger, ongoing project with Emmanuel College, our team created content about how students find their sense of belonging at the College. Many students find their sense of belonging at college after they join different clubs and orgs. And we figured these were the perfect people to talk to! The goal was to capture content about how students can further explore their interests, grow personally and professionally, meet new people, and find their place on campus by being involved at Emmanuel.

Our team decided to host a media day for students from different clubs and organizations on campus. The idea was to record for one day on campus and get as much content as possible. We captured fun clips of students in front of a branded backdrop and interviewed one representative from each club about how their involvement at Emmanuel has helped their experience.
The team at Emmanuel identified a list of organizations that would be good to highlight from around campus. From there, we reached out to one student from each group to conduct a pre-interview and organize details for the shoot day. Each group signed up for a time slot to film with us throughout the day.
One of the best ways to spread your institution’s message is to leverage second level networks. For Emmanuel, this meant involving their students directly in the content sharing process. So, in addition to a main video that incorporated all the students we filmed with, we also put together an individual reel for each student group. The goal was for these groups to share their video on their own social channels. This way, the reach of the content is expanded because it is being put in front of a different audience.
The reels consisted of many fun clips we shot with props and signage in front of a branded EC flag along with soundbites from their representative’s interview. This was also a great way to include soundbites from the students that did not make it into the main video. We also thought it would be fun to incorporate content that the students generated themselves. We reached out to each group and asked for photos or videos of their meetings, rehearsals, or events; just additional content to show these students spending time and having fun with each other.

In addition, we chose a couple of the students to create solo reels for. They were not tied to a just one specific group that received their own reel, so we decided to create mini solo stories out of their interviews. We felt that not only was this a great way to publish more content that didn’t make it into the overall video, it was also a great way to showcase these students that are deeply involved with many different groups on campus. This was an idea that we had after we recorded all the content and had a chance to review everything back in our office. We had so much great content and we wanted to find additional ways for Emmanuel to use it!

As mentioned previously, this video was part of a larger project with Emmanuel College. This was the first video as a part of this project. Therefore, we needed to work out a visual identity that could carry through to the other videos, of which have varying levels of tones and topics. A fun, energetic video about student groups will have a different tone than a piece about research being done at the College, for example.
Emmanuel College is the Heart of Boston, thus, the idea here was to create content about different things that Emmanuel is “on the pulse” of. In this instance, it was the “Pulse of Belonging”. Playing on the heart and pulse idea, our team came up with an intro graphic of a beating heart that could be used across each video in this suite of content. We also included some “pulsing” transitions and Emmanuel’s tertiary colors. Collectively, we also decided that we liked the look of on-screen quotes. Therefore, we included them here and will continue to include them through the series. This informed the look of the rest of the series, even if we didn’t include every creative element into every video.
In the end, we successfully produced content that showcased how students build their confidence and connection via their involvements on campus. We walked way with a suite of content that Emmanuel could use on their own social channels as well as content that we could hand over to the students. We also created extra content from this that Emmanuel could use in different ways. This project informed how we would approach the rest of the “On the Pulse” content and laid the foundation through the content’s visual identity.
