We’ve had the opportunity to be a part of many different campus celebrations and commencement ceremonies. But this particular event with Phillips Academy – Andover was a unique experience.
5 years ago, Andover promised the Class of 2020 the celebration they deserved after COVID-19 shut the world down. They kept their promise, and hosted a 5-year reunion and commencement weekend for the class of 2020 this month. And our team had the privilege to be a part of it!
We were there for the commencement portion of the weekend to capture the emotion and energy of the day. We captured the procession, bag pipes (of course), alternate shots of speakers on stage. All of the typical commencement activities! But Andover also has some unique traditions that we made sure to highlight as well.
Each graduate receives a rose before the procession. This makes for beautiful pops of color and opportunities for action shots of throwing roses. And instead of each student walking across the stage to receive their diploma, they distribute the diplomas and read aloud names while all of the students stand in a circle. After all of the diplomas are handed out, the students, in this case alums, sing traditional school songs and run to the middle of the circle for a mosh pit-like celebration! These unique traditions gave us the opportunity to capture some fun and different shots; specifically with our Insta360 camera.
We made the decision to hand off our Insta360 camera to an alum for the mosh pit. We were so happy with the results! The Insta360 captures an entire 360 view of the frame. This gave us a variety of different options for editing that shot. One recording yields multiple clips that can be used, just like these clips below. Not only does it give us lots of options for shot selection, but it gives us completely different shots than any other camera. Zoomed all the way out, the 360 camera gives us what we like to call the “small planet” shot. For this particular instance, this shot gave us the chance to see some of the beautiful buildings on campus as well as the roses being thrown in the air.
All in all, it was a beautiful day for a commencement celebration. We were happy to be a part of capturing the excitement, and to get the chance to try out some new, fun shots!
