Before 2022, Artificial Intelligence wasn’t really in the headlines of major news outlets and was something most people left to the geniuses over in Silicon Valley. But these days you can’t walk down the street without seeing an ad for the newest app or service boasting its fresh new AI capabilities. Although a tad annoying, it is exciting to see how this new technology has been embraced by society and is now being implemented into just about every industry under the sun. But you may be asking yourself, “when would I ever use AI?”
I had the same thought for a while but after writing a few blog posts and recording podcasts about AI in video production, I can finally give a real example! I am here to tell you that recently we here at 5 Tool discovered a really creative way to use Photoshop’s new Generative AI feature to help us create really great looking social content.
One problem you may encounter is your content was captured in a certain way that doesn’t play well in the viral vertical format you see all over Tiktok and Instagram. If you filmed your podcast or stage event in horizontal 16:9 widescreen format, that will be hard to post in on a vertical 9:16 platform like those mentioned above. This was the case when creating social clips from content we had captured at the 2023 Administrative Professionals Conference.
Not to fret! This is where our new friend generative AI comes in to save the day!
Generative AI can take your existing image or video and seamlessly create something out of thin air to fit whatever format you need.
As you can see in the image above and the examples below, with the help of Gen. AI, we were able to create vertical social clips out of horizontal video.
It works by using the pixels from the original video frame to predict and create what is not there. So for this example, the APC Podcast booth had a white wooden backdrop that extended to the ceiling with the podcast logo above the host and guest. Our cameras did not capture this, but we were able to use AI to extend that wooden backdrop enough to fill the 9:16 frame. After that we added the logo back in using a photo and some blending techniques to make it look like the vinyl sticker that was on the backdrop in person. Then, add some branded captions and bang! You have yourself a vertical social clip edited and ready to share!
Scrolling through any social media these days, you may come across a clip from your favorite podcast or an interview with a celebrity or influencer. You’ll notice that these clips are usually presented in the same format: vertical videos with attention grabbing captions sometimes accompanied by music or emojis. The main goals of these clips are to post a snippet from a longer episode/conversation to entice the viewer to seek out that longer form content and watch the full thing. As we have mentioned in other blog posts, this form of short form content increases accessibility and shareability as well as capitalizing on a pre-established audience, depending on the content. Overall, short form social clips are a great tool to make your content live on from a webinar, event, or podcast long after the original date has past.
